Abebe Bikila አበበ ቢቂላ lived from August 7, 1932 – October 25, 1973, was a two-time Olympic marathon champion from Ethiopia. He was the first black African in history to win a gold medal in the Olympics. A stadium in Addis Ababa is named in his honor.

Derartu Tulu ዻራርቱ ቱሉ born March 21, 1972 in Bekoji, Arsi Province, Ethiopia, is an Ethiopian long distance track, road and marathon athlete. Her cousins Ejegayehu , Tirunesh and Genzebe are all successful international long-distance runners.Tulu is the first Ethiopian woman to win a medal in the Olympic Games. She is also the first woman from Africa to win an Olympic gold medal. Her 1992 Olympic gold medal launched her career.Her 60.3 second-last lap at the end of the 10,000 meters at the Sydney Olympics

$Haile G\Selasie$ Haile G\Selasie ኃይሌ ገብረ ሥላሴ, born April 18, 1973, is an Ethiopian long distance track and road running athlete. Gebrselassie has achieved major competition wins at distances between 1500 metres and the marathon, moving from outdoor, indoor and cross country running to road running in the latter part of his career. He has broken 26 world records and won numerous Olympic and World Championship titles, and is widely considered one of the greatest distance runners in history.

Kenenisa Bekele ቀነኒሳ በቀለ; born June 13, 1982 in Ethiopia is an Ethiopian distance runner who holds the world record and Olympic record in both the 5000 metres and 10,000 metres events. He is the reigning two-time Olympic champion over 10,000 metres and the most accomplished runner in IAAF World Cross Country Championships history, with six long (12K) course and five short (4K) course titles. Bekele has never been beaten over 10,000m, and with his vast array of medals, many consider him to be one of the greates
