I don't have time for studying, but if it's important, I will send a buoy to gather information to send to Starfleet for follow up. If it's something new, we will take the time to catalog the new findings in the computer for the science department to study.

I will only send an away team if needed. I would make scans of the surface, and record information of any pre-warp civilization, and provide diplomatic relations with advanced civilizations. I would remain cloaked as I made detailed scans and made sure there is minimal risk to any potential away team. If I am in need of supplies, I will take precautions, and then try to make trades with any civilizations. This would not apply to me, I am stationed for planetary defences.
