Bangkok, Thailand
Bangkok is a lively city and the cultural, educational, political and economical pulse of Thailand. Bangkok's densest area contains a sea of buildings, most of which are white in colour offer a unique look to the city during the day. Out of Bangkok has 11 structures over 197 meters 8 were build in 2000 or beyond. Bangkok is constantly growing in height, width and girth.
Chicago, USA
Chicago is the birthplace of the modern skyscraper. When Chicago built its first steel high-rise in 1885, it was not the tallest structure in the world but the first example of a new form of engineering that would change nearly every city on earth. Chicago has 20 buildings over 200 metres tall (three of which are among the top 20 tallest buildings in the world, including the tallest in North America).
Dubai, United Emirates
Is this a mirage in the Middle East? Seemingly out of nowhere emerges a city in the middle of a desert. This is Dubai, a city that produces only the best modern architecture in the world. Already home of the world's tallest all-hotel building and the 2nd tallest all-residential building in the world, AND currently is building the world's tallest structure, this skyline might just leap to the number 1 spot in the near future.
Frankfurt, Germany
Frankfurt is Europe's only entry in the top 15. Certainly one of Europe's most interesting cities in terms of skylines, Frankfurt is home to five structures that are over 200 metres tall. These modern skyscrapers are marvels compared to those other, mostly non-existent ones scattered across other European cities. The contrast here is interesting: The city combines low-rise, high-density traditional European architecture (some of which is over 1,000 years old), with modern towers that stick out like sore thumbs.
Hong Kong, China
The city of Hong Kong has the greatest skyline in the world! Hong Kong has a whopping 43 buildings over 200 metres tall, 30 of which were built in the year 2000 or later!!! There are also an number of residential condominiums with 60 stories. It also boasts four of the 17 tallest buildings in the world… That's 20% of the top 20, all in one city! Egbert Gramsbergen and Paul Kazmierczak have dubbed Hong Kong "The tallest city in the world" in their online Skyscraper Cities Ranking List which is referenced in the Almanac of Architecture in 2006.
Istanbul,Turkey
Throughout its history, Istanbul has maintained its position as the heart of the economy. The city today is the backbone of Turkey’s economy. Istanbul generates 46% of the national exports and imports 40% of the total imports of Turkey. The possessor of many positive features in terms of history and culture, Istanbul is making great strides towards becoming an international tourism center.
Johannesburg, South Africa
The "City of Gold". Johannesburg is the largest city in the world not built on or near a major water source. That alone makes it a phenomenon onto itself. The majority of the skyscrapers in the CBD are from the boom of the 70s and 80s. Three towers stand at over 200 meters and are the tallest and most grand structures in all of Africa. The city has promised to rejuvenate its CBD with more buildings, but the fact still remains that the nightlife, shopping and the culture is still very much alive.
London.England
London England is one of the largest, densest and most culturally significant cities in the world. The architecture and skyline are a representation of this fact. While London does not have the same type of distinguishable centralized downtown such as cities like Toronto or New York has, it still holds its own, especially by European standards in terms of skyscrapers in central business districts.
New york ,USA
Is the most populous city in the United States, and the center of the New York metropolitan area, which is among the most populous urban areas in the world. A leading global city, New York exerts a powerful influence over worldwide commerce, finance, culture, fashion and entertainment. As host of the United Nations headquarters, it is also an important center for international affairs. The city is often referred to as New York City to differentiate it from the state of New York, of which it is a part.
Osaka, Japan
One of the largest cities in the world, both in area and in population. Osaka is home to the famous and unique Umeda Sky Building. The city is a sea of high-rises in a nested maze of canals, spanning bridges, freeways and parks. With 2 buildings over 200 meters and plenty of other futuristic buildings and no real CBD, but rather a continuum of seemingly sporadic development, Osaka's skyline is very unique and interesting for almost any angle
Paris, France
The world famous Eiffel tower held the record for the tallest man made structure in the world from 1889 to 1930. Asides from that, Paris only has one other structure over 200 meters tall. Nevertheless, Paris unlike many other historically great European cities, has a number of "modern" commercial buildings in an area called La Défense. This business district is separated from the main tourist attractions of the city and cannot normally be seen in skyline shots, since they are normally focused around the Eiffel Tower.
Philadelphia, USA
"Philly" is one of America's oldest cities and once the Capital of America! Philly is rich with historical culture. Philadelphia has successfully found away to preserve it's history and incorporate modern corporate architecture into the city's mix. Although Philadelphia has a dense downtown core, it's suburban sprawl has spread in all direction (except into the Delaware river), making the downtown the only real gem. Philadelphia has recently completed it's tallest building ever, the Comcast center.
San Francisco, California
Tokyo, Japan
Tokyo is the world's most populated city and considered by many to be the capital of the Eastern world. Its skyline has a number of unique characteristics that set it apart from other big city skylines, among them 18 structures at over 200 metres tall (including the Tokyo Tower which changes colors every night). But because of the density and vast size of the city, every corner appears to have its own skyline.
Toronto, Canada
Toronto is a meeting place, a crossroads of many cultures and ethnicities. . Toronto has 7 structures in its skyline that stand at over 200 metres, including the astonishingly tall 553 metre, CN Tower, which is often referred to as the tallest free-standing structure in North America. Currently, the CN Tower possess the world's highest observation deck, making this city's skyline one of the most immediately identifiable
